VMware

Well, Its been a couple days since my last post (I had a medical test Friday and was pretty drugged into Saturday). This is kind of old news but, as you may already know VMware released a new "player" to run their virtual machines, but not create new ones. I have been getting annoyed with having to reboot into windows to do my homework for a Programming Class so I have been setting up a Windows install that will run under windows. I could use qemu or bochs but vmware is faster, and a tad bit easier to work with. The nice thing is that now its free. To get your self a working virtual machine you can either download VMware workstation, and use a 30 day evaluation key to get your self started and then switch to vmware player or follow the instructions here. For those of us Linux users who want to run a windows program or two, this is great (assuming you have a copy of windows) because almost all programs run flawlessly in vmware. For those of you Windows users, its even better because it gets you yet another way to try Linux and learn something without harming your system. You can play with partitioning on your virtual disc, and have full networking support. (I have noticed that in linux there is a bug that causes bridged networking to be incompatible with wireless networks, but it doesn't seem to effect windows). To get started go pick out a linux distro to play with and have at it. You should find that setup is pretty obvious (it even boots off the cd by default the first time). If you don't feel like doing a setup your self you can check out some of the pre-made virtual machines (I expect you can find some more with google).

Well, Im running out of time, so sorry about a slightly fragmented post, but maybe it will help some of you learn something (or at least keep you busy) anyway.
